November 18, 2022 has arrived. I will create a memory today that won’t be a good one. I will say “Goodbye” to a friend. It’s a reminder that we have a finite number of days to enjoy life. If you want to do something or go somewhere, do now. Life is short. Today is Mickey Mouse Day, Apple Cider Day, International Stand Up to Bullying Day, National Princess Day, National Vichyssoise Day, Occult Day, and William Tell Day. In case you’re wondering, Vichyssoise is a thick soup made of boiled and puréed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream, and chicken stock. It is traditionally served cold, but it can be eaten hot. Now you know. This is the day in 1307 that William Tell reportedly shot an apple off of his son’s head. On this day in 1686 the surgeon Charles Felix operated on King Louis XlV who had an anal fistula. Before he operated on the Kind, he practiced the procedure on several peasants. On this day in 1805 30 women met at Mrs. Silas Lee’s home in Wiscasset, Maine to organize the Female Charitable Society which was the 1st women’s club in America. On this day in 1872 suffragette Susan B. Anthony was arrested and charged with illegally voting. This is the day in 1909 that the US invaded Nicaragua to overthrow President Zelaya. In 1916 on this day British General Douglas Haig called off the 1st battle of Somme in WWl after more than 1 million soldiers had been killed or wounded. Wow. On this day in 1961 JKF sent 18,000 military advisors to South Vietnam. Today we visit the grave of Marcel Proust who was a French novelist and critic and died on this day in 1922. Marcel said, “The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” Next is the German philosopher Adam Weishaupt who asked the question “Oh mortal man, is there anything you cannot be made to believe?” Last for today is JFK’s father, Joseph P. Kennedy who said “don’t buy a single vote more than necessary. I’ll be dammed if I’m going to pay for a landslide.” I like that one. Abide.
