The 16th day of December has arrived. It’s a good day to sit back and count your blessings. Call up a friend you haven’t talked to lately. Send someone a thank you email or electronic card. Try to make someone feel good and in doing so, feel good yourself. Today is Boston Tea Party Day, National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, Stupid Toy Day, Underdog Day, and my pick: National Chocolate Covered Anything Day. On this day in 1431 King Henry VI of England was crowned King of France and became the only monarch to wear both crowns. On this day in 1620 Myles Standish and a group of 18 settlers are confronted by 30 Native Americans. This event in known as the ‘First Encounter’. This is the day in 1707 of the last recorded eruption of Mount Fuji in Japan. On this day in 1773 the Sons of Liberty, disguised as Mohawk Indians threw 342 chests of tea belonging to the British East Indian Company int Bost Harbor. You’ve been taught the reason was ‘taxation without representation’. That wasn’t the reason. England had given the East Indian Company a monopoly to sell tea in the colonies and eliminated the taxes on it. This monopoly was the reason for the protest. On this day in 1907 President Roosevelt sent the ’Great White Fleet’ on a round-the-world cruise to project America’s Navel power. On this day in 1918 in a title fight, Jack Dempsey knocked out Carl Morris in 14 seconds. On this day in 1944 Germany launched a counteroffensive named the ‘Battle of the Bulge’. On this day in 1953 President Eisenhower held the 1st White House Press Conference. There were 161 reporters invited. Today the 1st dead person is songwriter Don Fogelberg who passed in 1956 and said, “I’m never going to satisfy everybody, so I decided to satisfy myself.” Next is the English writer W. Somerset Maugham who said, “It’s a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it” and “The most valuable thing I have learned from life is to regret nothing.” Last for today is a quote from the Irish writer Joseph Murphy who said, “Every thought is a cause, and every condition is an effect. Change your thoughts and you change your destiny.” I think he’s right. Have a good day. Abide.
