It’s become October 6th 2020. We’ve already traveled around 600,000 miles with a million miles to go before we get to the 7th day. Hard to wrap your brain around the fact that the earth is traveling through space at that speed. So far this month has been interesting. The virus is picking up speed in most places and there are studies that predict nearly 3,000 deaths a day in December. We still need to be careful. We can still celebrate this day. It’s Come And Take It Day, Garlic Lovers Day (my pick), Mad Hatter Day, National German American Day, National Plus Size Appreciation Day and National Noodle Day. Maybe I’ll have some pasta with butter and garlic for lunch? Now onto the history of this day: In 1863 on this day Dr Charles H Sheppard opens the 1st public bath in Brooklyn. On this day in 1889, Thomas Edison shows his first motion picture. This is the day in 1927 that “The Jazz Singer”, is released. It is the 1st film with a soundtrack ends silent movies. And for all you Cub fans, this is the day in 1945 that Tavern owner “Billy Goat” Sianis buys seat for his goat for Game 4 of Baseball World Series, is escorted out and casts goat curse on Chicago Cubs. This is Thor Heyerdahl’s birthday. Thor was a Norwegian anthropologist and explorer. He said, “In my experience, it is rarer to find a really happy person in a circle of millionaires than among vagabonds.” This is also the day that Alfred Lord Tennyson stopped living in 1892 at the age of 83. This is a long quote but a good one: “No man ever got very high by pulling other people down. The intelligent merchant does not knock his competitors. The sensible worker does not knock those who work with him. Don’t knock your friends. Don’t knock your enemies. Don’t knock yourself.” Wear the mask and be sure to Abide.
