It’s now the 26th day of July 2023. It occurred to me this morning that the default setting for humans is negative. That’s a combination of anger, jealousy, dissatisfaction, and just being pissed off in general. Why? Because we’re constantly bombarded by advertising that says: “you are unhappy because you don’t have (fill in the blank) so you need to buy it to be happy.” And the news which is always negative. If you’d rather be happy, you need to eliminate negative thoughts, count your blessings and be happy. I do and hope you do too. July 26th is Aunts and Uncles Day, Holistic therapy Day, National All or Nothing Day, National Bagelfest Day, National Coffee Milkshake Day, One Voice Day, and World Tofu Day. Now some history: On this day in 1533 Francisco Pizarro ordered the death of the last Sapa Inca Emperor, Atahualpa. 200 Conquistadors conquered an Empire of 10 million people. On this day in 1755 Giacomo Casanova was arrested in Venice for affront to religion and common decency. He probably had an affair with the wrong wife. On this day in 1755 the Continental Congress created the United States Post Office in Philadelphia under Ben Franklin. On this day in 1835 Hawaii’s first sugar cane plantation began. On this day in 1865 Patrick Francis Healy was the 1st African American awarded a PhD from the University of Leuven, Belgium. On this day in 1945 the US, Britan and China demanded the unconditional surrender of Japan. The Japanese government disregarded the ultimatum. On the same day the plutonium core for the Fat Man bomb, which would be dropped on Nagasaki, was sent to the island of Tinian where the bomb was assembled. Today we will hear from the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung who was born on this day in 1875. Carl said, “the world will ask you who you are, and if you don’t know, the world will tell you.” “We are not what happened to us, we are what we wish to become.” “Life really does begin at forty. Up until then, you are just doing research.” “The difference between a good life and a bad life is how well you walk through the fire.” I’ll end with this piece of advice: “Everyone you meet knows something you don’t know but need to know. Learn from them.” Abide.
