I woke up in the time/space of May 29, 2021. I’m happy to report that there are no Xs on the National Hurricane Center’s map of the Atlantic. I admit to being slightly obsessive when it comes to hurricanes. Today is End of the Middle Ages Day, International Coq Au Vin Day, Learn About Composing Day, International Jazz Day, Paper Clip Day, Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day and Biscuit Day. At the turn of the last century, people would put a piece of cloth from their bedroom on their cooler for good luck and fertility. That turned into the pillow on the fridge. I’ll go with the biscuit today. This is the day in 1733 that the right of Canadians to keep Indian slaves was upheld in Quebec City. I didn’t know that Canadians had slaves. On this day in 1851 Sojourner Truth addressed the 1st Black Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. I bring this up for a quote from Sojourner, “The rich rob the poor, and the poor rob one another.” In 1932, the Bonus Army of World War I veterans began to assemble in Washington, D.C. to request cash bonuses promised to them to be paid in 1945. There were 43,000 people protesting. They were unemployed, it was the bottom of the depression. It was a desperate time. Today is the birthday of G. K. Chesterton who was an English writer, philosopher, and theologian. He said, “Moral issues are always terribly complex for someone without principles.” And: “The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected.”. I like both of his quotes. In 1979 on this day, Mary Pickford assumed room temperature after living 87 years. Mary said ” I was forced to live far beyond my years when just a child, now I have reversed the order and I intend to remain young indefinitely.” Sounds like a good plan to me. Enough for this day. Abide.
