I wonder how history will record June 4, 2020 and the days surrounding it. Will this turn out to be a periodic venting of frustrations or a turning point of change. If I had to bet, I’d put my money on the venting but we can always hope for a better outcome. Since I’m old, white and live in a gated community, I’m not impacted either way. That doesn’t mean I don’t care. But those are big subjects and I’m interested in the small things like what Day it is. It’s Audacity to Hope Day which I think is fitting. It’s also Hug your Cat Day, Mom’s Equal Pay Day, National Moonshine Day, National Cognac Day, National Cheese Day and Old Maids Day. If I had a cat, I’d hug him. Maybe hug an old maid? Don’t think so. I’ll go with cheese because this is the day in 1070 that Roquefort cheese is created in a cave near Roquefort, France. This is the day in 1896 that Henry Ford takes his 1st Ford through streets of Detroit. This is the day in 1940 British complete the “Miracle of Dunkirk” by evacuating 338,226 allied troops from France via a flotilla of over 800 vessels including Royal Navy destroyers, merchant marine boats, fishing boats, pleasure craft and even lifeboats. There were no interesting birthdays today but a few deaths of note. On this day in 1798 Giacomo Casanova, Italian adventurer, writer, librarian and womanizer, dies at 73. He said “I don’t conquer, I submit.” This is also the day in 1973 that Arna Bontemps, American poet dies of a heart attack at 72 in Nashville. He said, “How dare anyone, parent, schoolteacher, or merely literary critic, tell me not to act colored.” That’s an interesting quote given the times we live in. That’s it folks. Now lets see what this day brings. I’m sure it will be interesting. Abide
