December 6th, 2021 is here. A new day is upon us. I know I say this with regularity but in my mind, it’s true. It’s the attitude I’m trying to achieve. I don’t want to go back to my youth when it was “just another day”. I had so many of them in my future. Tens of thousands of them. Times have changed. I want to enjoy each and every one I have left. Today is Miners Day, National Gazpacho Day, Microwave Oven Day, Mitten Tree Day, National Pawn Broker Day, Put On Your Own Shoes Day, Saint Nicolas Day and Walt Disney Day. Now to what happened on this day. In 1240, Mongols, led by Batu Khan, destroyed Kiev; out of 50,000 people in the city only 2,000 survive. Wow. In 1735, First recorded appendectomy was performed at St George’s Hospital in London. In 1862 on this day, Abraham Lincoln ordered the hanging of 39 Santee Sioux Indians. This is the largest execution in American History. The Santee Sioux had killed over 409 white settlers, including women and children in an uprising. On this day in 1947 the Everglades National Park in Florida was dedicated. This is one date when there aren’t any people who were born or died with quotes worth passing on. I searched “another day” and came up with these: Ron Cephas Jones said, “Every morning that I wake up and I’m breathing, I can feel it and take a moment to say, you know, Thank God I’m alive for another day”. I’ll end with a quote on the subject of “life”: Bob Marley said, “Open you eyes, look within. Are you satisfied with the life you’re living?” Yes, Bob, I am. Enough for this day. Abide.
