Now we’ve moved into the time/space of August 2020. On this 1st day, a hurricane is about to hit Florida. A little like getting hit by a pie in the face when you open the door. And, there’s two more brewing out in the Atlantic. The track on this one is something to worry about. It doesn’t make landfall, it just runs up the entire East Coast. It will be ugly. That’s in our near future but not today. Today is Homemade Pie Day which is probably my pick. It’s also National Disc Golf Day, Mead Day, National Girlfriends Day, National Mustard Day, Play Ball Day and Spider-Man Day. There’s more but this is enough for me. I do like Mead but I’ll stick with Pie. Here are a few historical footnotes: This is the day in 1834 that slavery is abolished throughout the British Empire. On this day in 1893 Henry Perky patents a machine used for the preparation of cereals for food, otherwise known as shredded wheat. On this day in 1933 the death penalty for anti-fascists in Germany goes into effect. This is the day in 1933 that the National Recovery Administration (NRA) is founded. The goal of the administration was to eliminate “cut throat competition” by bringing industry, labor, and government together to create codes of “fair practices” and set prices. Lastly, this is the day in 1944 of Anne Frank’s last diary entry. She is arrested 3 days later. This is the day in 10 BC that Claudius, Roman Emperor from 41 to 54 was born. He said, “To do nothing evil is good; to wish nothing evil is better.” This is also the day in 1819 Herman Melville, American author of Moby Dick is born in NYC, New York. He said, I am, as I am; whether hideous, or handsome, depends upon who is made judge.” That’s sufficient for this day. Stay safe. This is far from over. Abide.
