The earth is now in the time/space of October 7, 2021. It’s just another day for most of us but for some, a life changing day. Babies will be born today and old people will die today. People will start living in their cars or tents and people will move into their first house. Some will be “let go” and some will begin a new job. This is the way life works. There are always winners and losers. I’ve been lucky to win more than my share in life’s lottery. I know, my gratitude is peaking around the corner. Today is Bathtub Day, National Flower Day, National Day Of Forgiveness And Happiness Day, National Frappe Day, You Matter To Me Day and National Inner Beauty Day. I’m going to celebrate Forgiveness and Happiness Day because letting go of the past wrongs is the right thing to do. On this day in 3761 BC was the epoch (origin) of the modern Hebrew calendar. That’d 5,782 years ago but only a wee bit when you consider humans have been here for 6 million years. On this day in 1501 is the 1st public burning of books in the Netherlands. I would like to point out that books were hard to make back then. This is the day in 1571 that the battle of Lepanto was fought. It is called the greatest naval battle ever fought and it was between a Christian coalition of European states and the Ottoman Empire. 3,800 people died. It’s also referred to as the battle that saved Europe. This is the day in 1916 that Georgia Tech defeats Cumberland, 222-0 which is the most lopsided score in the history of US college football. Today is Sherman Alexie’s birthday. He was born in 1966 and is a Native American novelist, short story writer, poet, and filmmaker. This quote from Sherman tells a story: “Last September 16th, I was walking in downtown Seattle when this pick-up truck pulls up in front of me. Guy leans out the window and yells, “Go back to your own country.” And I was laughing so hard because it wasn’t so much a hate crime as a crime of irony”. This is the day in 1894 that we lost Oliver Windell Homes Sr. who died at the age of 85. I’ll end with this post with this quote: “Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out.” Abide.
