Easter morning, April 17, 2022. It’s ‘the” big day for Christians and chocolate candy makers. This is one of the holidays that brought my large family together. Lots of good memories. Easter isn’t the only thing we can celebrate on this day. It’s Bat Appreciation Day, Blah, Blah, Blah Day, Ellis Island Family History Day, International Ford Mustang Day, National Cheeseball Day, National Kickball Day, International Haiku Poetry Day, Malbec World Day and There’s Nothing Like a Dame Day. Now to history: On this day in 1492 Columbus signed a contract with the Spanish monarchs to find the “Indies” with the stated goal of converting people to Catholicism. The contract also promised him 10% of all riches found, and the governorship of any lands encountered. On this day in 1869 the 1st professional baseball game was played. In 1907 Ellis Island processes a record number of immigrants: 11,745. This is the day in 1934 that the new Fenway Park opened. This is the date in 1961 that 1,400 Cuban exiles landed in Bay of Pigs in a doomed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro. Today my quotes begin with Ben Franklin who died on this day in 1790. Ben said, “He that is good mor making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” “When in doubt, don’t.” “It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation and only one bad one to lose it. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who was simply known as “Gabo” died in 2014. He said, “No matter what, nobody can take away the dances you’ve already had” and “No, not rich. I am a poor man with money, which is not the same thing.” I’ll wrap this post up with a quote from Doris Roberts who played Mom on Everybody Loves Raymond. She died in her sleep on this day in 2016 at the age of 90. Doris said, “I don’t give in, I don’t give up, and I don’t take no for an answer.” Have a great day. Abide.
