Easter morning, April 17, 2022. It’s ‘the” big day for Christians and chocolate candy makers. This is one of the holidays that brought my large family together. Lots of good memories. Now to history: On this day in 1492 Columbus signed a contract with the Spanish monarchs to find the “Indies” with the stated goal of converting people to Catholicism. The contract also promised him 10% of all riches found, and the governorship of any lands encountered. On this day in 1869 the 1st professional baseball game was played. In 1907 Ellis Island processes a record number of immigrants: 11,745. This is the day in 1934 that the new Fenway Park opened. This is the date in 1961 that 1,400 Cuban exiles landed in Bay of Pigs in a doomed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro. Today my quotes begin with Ben Franklin who died on this day in 1790.
