This new day is called January 8th, 2023. After writing over 1,500 of these posts, it’s more difficult to start each one differently. The purpose of the first few sentences is to remind myself and you to appreciate life. I’ll start this post with a quote from Audrey Hepburn who said, “The most important thing is to enjoy your life – to be happy – it’s all that matters.” Today is Argyle Day, Bubble Bath Day, Earth’s Rotation Day, National English Toffee Day, National Man Watcher’s Day, National Sunday Supper Day, Show and Tell Day at Work Day, War on Poverty Day, and No Pants Subway Ride Day. Onto history: On this day in 1675 the 1st American commercial corporation was charted. It was the NY Fishing Company. On this day in 1708 a Spanish armada loaded with gold was sunk by a British squadron off the coast of Colombia. It was discovered in 2015. This is the day in 1790 that George Washington delivered the 1st state of the union address. On this day in 1815 the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812 took place. The war ended on December 24th but neither side knew. On this day in 1835 the US national debt was $0 for the 1st and only time in history. This is the day in 1877 that Crazy Horse and his Sioux warriors fought their last battle with the US Cavalry in the Montana Territory. In 1902 the New York state assembly passed a law to criminalize men turning around on the street and “looking at a woman in that way”. On this day in 1962 Jack Nicklaus made his first professional appearance when he tied for 50th place in the Los Angeles Open. The first dead person today is the astronomer Galileo Galilei who said, “There are those who reason well, but they are greatly outnumbered by those who reason badly.” Next is David Bowie what said, “As you get older, the questions come down to about two or three. How long? And what do I do with the time I’ve got left?” Last is Stephen Hawkins who said, “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.” Abide.
