It has become March 24, 2023. Another click in the celestial clock. Will a historical footnote happen today? I hope not because reading the history of each day as I compose this post has shown me that historical footnotes are usually bad news for someone. Today is National Cheesesteak Day, National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day, National Cocktail Day, and International Day for Achievers. A short list but a good one. Now to the history part of this post. On this day in 1603 Tokugawa was given the title of Shogun (Military dictator). He and his sons would rule Japan until 1867. This is the day in 1832 that the Mormon leader, Joseph Smit was beaten, tarred and feathered in Hiram, OH. On this day in 1837 Canada gave its black citizens the right to vote. On this day in 1860 the Clipper Ship Andrew Jackson arrived in San Francisco, 89 days out of New York. On this day in 1906 the “Census of the British Empire” shows that Great Britan ruled 1/5th of the world. In 1920 on this day the 1st Coast Guard air station was established in Morehead City, NC. This is the day in 1942 that the US government began moving American citizens of Japanese ancestry into detention centers. On this day in 1944 in retaliation to a partisan attack which killed 33 Germans, the SS executed 335 civilians and political prisoners in Rome. This is the day in 1947 that the US Congress proposed a 2-term limitation on the presidency. In 1958 on this day Elvis Presley joined the US Army. Today’s dose of wisdom comes from the comic Garry Shandling who died in 2016 at the too young age of 66. Garry said, “Nice guys finish first. If you don’t know that you don’t know where the finish line is.” “I’m dating a homeless woman. It was easier talking her into staying over.” “I’m vary loyal in relationships. Even when I go out with my mom, I don’t look at other moms.” “My friends tell me I have an intimacy problem. But they don’t really know me.” And with that, I’ll say Abide for today.
