It’s now January 20th, 2023. Once again, I woke up in a warm house with food, plenty of shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops to choose from and a workable vehicle in the garage. I won’t get into the sophisticated electronics or the kitchen appliances. I have more good stuff than the richest person on earth had 100 years ago. Life is good. Today is Camcorder Day, International Day of Acceptance (not sure that’s a legal day in Florida), International Sweatpants Day, National Buttercrunch Day, National Cheese Lovers Day, National Disc Jockey Day, Penguin Awareness Day, and Take a Walk Outdoors Day. Next comes the history portion of this post: On this day in 1785 Samuel Ellis advertised that Oyster Island, now named Ellis Island, was for sale. No one wanted it. On this day in 1841 China ceded Hong Kong to the British during the 1st Opium War. On this day in 1869, Elizabeth Cady Stanton became the 1xt woman to testify before the US Congress. She was a women’s rights activist. On this day in 1920 the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was founded. This is the day in 1930 that the 1st radio broadcast of the “Lone Ranger” was broadcast from WXYZ in Detroit. On this day in 1942 the Nazi officials met at the Wannsee Conference in Berlin to organize the “final solutions” for Europe’s 11 million Jews. On this day in 1945 FDR was sworn-in for his 4th term as President. This is the day in 1968 that the movie “Bonnie and Clyde” premiered. I’ll begin the quotes section with the singer Meat Loaf who said, “Who am I, why am I here? Forget the question, someone give me another beer.” Next is the philosopher John Ruskin who said, “Kind hearts are the garden, kind thoughts are the roots, kind words are the blossoms, kind deeds are the fruit.” I’ll wrap this post up with a quote from George Burns because it’s his birthday. George said, “Fist you forget names, then you forget faces. Next you forget to pull your zipper up and finally, you forget to pull it down.” Too funny. Abide.
