We have just passed milepost 9.2.2020. Like any good highway, there are off ramps and entrance ramps. More people come on than take the exit. There are a few more than 7.8 billion people now on the highway of life. I hope to stay in my lane for a while longer. As Groucho said, “I plan to live forever or die trying”. Today is National Blueberry Popsicle Day, Spalding Baseball Day, World Coconut Day, Victory over Japan Day and Pierce Your Ears Day. I might put the lime in the coconut and and drink um both up? On this day in 1666 the Great Fire of London begins and 80% of London is destroyed. This is the day in 1792 of the September Massacres of the French Revolution take place In Paris when rampaging mobs slaughter 3 Roman Catholic bishops, more than two hundred priests, and prisoners believed to be royalist sympathizers. Revolutions are messy things. In 1798 on this day the first bank robbery in the US takes place at the Bank of Pennsylvania. The take is $162,821. Finally, in 1935 on this day the Labor Day hurricane makes landfall in Florida, killing 423 people. It is the strongest and most intense hurricane ever to make landfall in the United States. This is the day that Ho Chi Minh, Vietnamese revolutionary, died at the age of 79. He said, “You will kill 10 of our men, and we will kill 1 of yours, and in the end it will be you who tire of it.” That my friends, is a profound statement and a good reason to avoid wars in foreign lands. This is also the day that Bob Denver (Gilligan) took the exit ramp at the age of 70. He said, “Gilligan’s Island is wherever you want it to be in your mind.” True enough I suppose. So that’s it for this day. Be sure to Abide and you might want to listen to the following:
