June 28th, 2021. So much better than this day a year ago. Covid is still out there but since I’m vaccinated, I ignore it. I’ve returned to normal and it’s such a great state of mind. Yet another thing to be grateful for. Today is a new, never been used day so let’s see what we can do with it. It’s International Body Piercing Day (nope), Paul Bunyan Day, Please Take My Children To Work Day, National Tapioca Day and Parrot Head Day. I am a Parrot Head so I will celebrate. Now to our history section of this post: on this day in 1820 the tomato was proven to be non-poisonous by Colonel Robert Gibbon when he ate a tomato on the steps of the courthouse in Salem, New Jersey. On this day in 1870 Congress created the federal holidays of New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. This is the day in 1914 that the Archduke of Austria and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo by a young Serb providing the spark that started WWI. Finally, this is the day in 1965 that the 1st US ground combat forces in Vietnam were authorized by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Today is the birthday (1712) of the Swiss philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He said, “Once you teach people to say what they do not understand, it is easy enough to get them to say anything you like.” And, ” The greatest braggarts are usually the biggest cowards.” Both quotes are worth thinking about. This is also the birthday of Gilda Radner who’s most memorable character was Roseanna Roseanadana from Saturday Night Live. A remarkable lady who died too soon of ovarian cancer. Gilda said, “I’ve learned what I can control is whether I am going to live a day in fear and depression and panic, or whether I am going to attack the day and make it as good a day, as wonderful a day, as I can.” I don’t have cancer and I’m not sick but I still plan to make my day as good and wonderful as I can. Abide.
