Here we are. 7.8 billion people have reached the 23rd day of November 2021. I’m glad to be one of the lucky many. Half of the people who live on this ball of rock flying through space live on $5.50 a day or less. I’m glad I’m not one of them. The average man lives 70 years. I’m glad I’m on the plus side of average. My ritual gratitude has now established today’s attitude. The high commission of Special Days has proclaimed that November 23rd is Doctor Who Day (British TV show), Eat a Cranberry Day, Fibonacci Day (middle-ages mathematician), National Cashew Day, National Espresso Day (yum) and Wolfenoot (wolf-a-note). It seems that a boy in New Zealand made up a holiday about a gift leaving wolf (think Easter bunny) and somehow it got some traction and now is recognized. I’ll stick with Espresso with some Cashews. Now to the history of this day. In 1783 Annapolis Maryland became the US Capital until June of 1784. This is the day in 1867 that three Irishmen were hung in Manchester England for the accidental murder of a policeman. They became known as the Manchester Martyrs and earned a place in Irish Nationalism folklore. On this day in 1914 the US Army withdrew from Mexico. On this day in 1945 most US wartime rationing of food, including meat and dairy, was lifted. In 1964 the Beatles released “I Feel Fine” and “She’s a Women”. I will end this post with quotes from Roland Dahl who stopped living in 1990 at the age of 74. Roland was a British novelist, short-story writer, poet and fighter pilot. He sold over 250 million books. He said, “I think probably kindness is my number one attribute in a human being. I’ll put it before any of the things like courage or bravery or generosity or anything else.” “Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” And, “If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” Abide.
