We are the only people, out of the 108 billion who have ever lived on planet Earth, that have lived long enough to reach 5.20.2021. In fact, around 150,000 of us who made it to yesterday, didn’t make it to today. The flip side of that coin is that 360,000 who weren’t here yesterday, will be today. I’m super happy to be one of the lucky people who get to live this day. It’s Be a Millionaire Day, Eliza Doolittle Day, Flower Day, World Bee Day, Pick Strawberries Day, National Red Sneakers Day, National ApĂ©ritif Day, Hummus Day and National Quiche Lorraine Day. I’m going with hummus and strawberries. Now a ride in the way back machine. On this day in 1310, shoes are first made for the right and left feet. In 1830, Hyde patented the fountain pen. In 1861 Kentucky proclaimed its neutrality in the Civil War. On this day in 1873 Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented the first blue jeans with copper rivets. Finally, on this day in 1916, 1917 and 1918, Codell, Kansas was hit by a tornado. That’s an example of really bad luck. Today is the birthday (1806) of John Sturart Mill who was an English philosopher, political economist, Member of Parliament, and civil servant. John said, “A person may cause evil to others not only by his actions but by his inaction, and in either case he is justly accountable to them for the injury.” He obviously believed we have a shared responsibility to protect other people. This is the day the world lost Gilda Susan Radner to cancer. Gilda said, “I’ve learned what I can control is whether I am going to live a day in fear and depression and panic, or whether I am going to attack the day and make it as good a day, as wonderful a day, as I can.” I agree with her. Abide.
