The name of this day is August 27, 2022. I intend to make this day a good one to live. I’m going to do my best not to react to the chaos that surrounds me and not to engage people expressing views and beliefs I disagree with. It won’t do me any good and you can tell someone something they don’t want to know. Wish me luck. We have a long list of potential events today: It’s Just Because Day, Kiss Me Day, National Banana Lovers Day, National Petroleum Day, National Pots de Crème Day, Play Music on the Porch Day, Pony Express Day, Speak Kind Words Saturday, Tarzan Day, and World Rock Paper Scissors Day. Whew… Now to history: On this day in 1859 the first successful oil well was drilled near Titusville, PA. On this day in 1872 Aaron Montgomery Ward issued the first “catalog” for his mail-order business. It was one sheet listing 163 available items. In 1883 the Krakatoa volcano in Indonesia erupted with a force of 1,300 megatons and killed approximately 40,000 people. On this day in 1942 Soviet woman sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko who is credited with 309 kills, was welcomed to the White House by Eleanor Roosevelt. This is the day in 1979 of the Warrenpoint ambush when 18 British soldiers were killed when the IRA exploded two roadside bombs as a British convoy passed Narrow Water Castle. Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash on this day in 1990 at the age of 35. Stevie said, “We are here, as far as I can tell, to help each other, not hurt each other.” Next is Haile Selassie who was the Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. He said, “It is both the duty and responsibility of the world’s fortunate few to help fulfil the legitimate aspirations of the unfortunate many.” I’m going to end today’s post with a couple of Sam Levenson’s quotes. “I’m going to stop putting things off, starting tomorrow.” If you die in an elevator, be sure to push the Up button.” Abide.
