The 14th day of March is here. The outside temperature is 54 degrees. I wonder how the 200,000 or so people who sleep in their cars did last night? Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of other. Most of us are empathetic. So I wonder how it feels to have to sleep in your car when it’s cold outside, every night. We “like” to believe that bad situations are the result of bad decisions, but in the case of children, it’s just bad luck. I’m grateful for where I’m at. Today is Celebrate Scientists Day, Crowdfunding Day, Genius Day, International Ask a Question Day, Learn About butterflies Day, National Organize Your Home Office Day, National Potato Chip Day, National Write Your Story Day, Pi Day, and National Save A Spider Day. It’s a pretty good list.  Now some history of this day. In 1590 the Battle of Ivry was fought between the Protestants and the Catholic League during the French Wars of Religion. Around 30,000 men trying to kill each other with swords, arrows, spears, and cannon over which religion was better. On this day in 1743 the first American town meeting was held in Boston’s Faneuil Hall. On this day in 1757 British Admiral John Byng was executed by firing squad on his own flagship for failing to come to the aide of a besieged British garrison. In 1794 on this day Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin revolutionizing the cotton industry. This is the day in 1903 that America’s first bird reservation was established in Sebastian, FL. On this day in 1913 the South African Supreme Court ruled that marriages not celebrated with Christian rites were null and void thereby invalidating all Muslim and Hindu marriages. Today’s dead person is Stephen Hawking. He said, “We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity. We cannot remain looking inwards at ourselves on a small and increasingly polluted and overcrowded plant.” “Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.” “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do noting to change it, look before they cross the road.” That’s a good place to end this post. Abide.
