I woke up in the time/space of May 29, 2020. I checked the news of last night and as I feared, it’s not good. I was in the Navy and out of the country in 1967 and 1968. I hope we aren’t headed to that level of discontent this time. We are undeniably sailing into stormy seas. I will focus on my tiny part of this world where the water is calm. Today is End of the Middle Ages Day, International Coq Au Vin Day, National Heat Awareness Day, Paper Clip Day, Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day and Biscuit Day. At the turn of the last century, people would put a piece of cloth from their bedroom on their cooler for good luck and fertility. That turned into the pillow on the fridge. I’ll go with the biscuit today. It’s what I’m making for breakfast. This is the day in 1733 that the right of Canadians to keep Indian slaves is upheld in Quebec City. I didn’t know that Canadians had slaves. On this day in 1851 Sojourner Truth addresses 1st Black Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. I bring this up for a quote from Sojourner, “The rich rob the poor, and the poor rob one another.” In 1932, the Bonus Army of World War I veterans begins to assemble in Washington, D.C. to request cash bonuses promised to them to be paid in 1945. There were 43,000 people protesting. They were unemployed, it was the bottom of the depression. It was a desperate time. Today is the birthday (1736) of Patrick Henry, American Revolutionary. He said, “Give me liberty or give me death” and “I know of no way of judging the future but by the past.” In 1979 on this day, Mary Pickford assumed room temperature after living 87 years. Mary said ” I was forced to live far beyond my years when just a child, now I have reversed the order and I intend to remain young indefinitely.” Sounds like a good plan to me. Now I start reading about what happened last night. I wish us all good luck. Abide.
