Today is November 5th, 2023. Another day of life awaits. We will host a welcome home party for out 18-year-old grandson (Nathan) who finished the Southern half (Harper’s Ferry Virginia to Spring Mountain Georgia) of the Appalachian trail yesterday. Some people set big goals and some people set small ones. Nathan set a big one and followed it through to the end. Today is American Football Day, Daylight Savings Time Ends, Guy Fawkes Day, National Donut Day, National Gunpowder Day, National Love Your Red Hair Day, Ply Monopoly Day and World Tsunami Awareness Day. It’s also Pirate Fest in the Cayman Islands which is a National Festival for them. Just thought I’d throw that in. On this day in 1492 Columbus learned how to grow and harvest corn from Cuba’s indigenous population. This is the day in 1605 that Guy Fawkes plot to blow up King James I and the British Parliament was discovered. Guy Fawkes was caught, tortured and executed along with 7 others. In return, he got a day on the celebration calendar. On this day in 1789 the French National Meeting (French revolution) declared all citizens equal under the law. On this day in 1917 the Supreme Court decision (Buchanan v Warley) struck down the ordinance in Louisville, KY that required blacks and whites to live in separate areas. On this day in 1940 Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected President for his third term. On this day in 1956 the Nat King Cole Show debuted on NBC. It was the first variety program to be hosted by an African American. This is the day in 2006 that Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death for his role in the massacre of 148 Shias in 1982. Today we will hear from the author and historian Will Durant who died in 1981. Will said, “It may be true that you can’t fool all of the people all the time, but you can fool enough of them to rule a large country.” “Forget mistakes. Forget failure. Forget everything except what you’re going to do now and do it. Today is your lucky Day.” “From barbarism to civilization requires a century; from civilization to barbarism needs but a day.” Last one: “There have been only 268 of the last 3,421 years free of war.” Why? Because some people profit from war. Abide.
