A new day is upon us. I know I say this with regularity but in my mind, it’s true. It’s the attitude I’m trying to achieve. I live in fear that I will revert back to the attitude of my youth when it was “just another day”. I had so many of them in my future. Thousands and thousands of them. Times have changed. I want to enjoy each and every one I have left. That’s why December 6, 2020 is so special. It’s Miners Day, National Gazpacho Day, Microwave Oven Day, Mitten Tree Day, National Pawn Broker Day, Put On Your Own Shoes Day and Saint Nicolas Day. Since I now resemble St. Nicolas, I’ll go with that one. Now to what happened on this day. In 1240, Mongols, led by Batu Khan, occupy and destroy Kiev; out of 50,000 people in the city only 2,000 survive. Wow. In 1735, First recorded appendectomy is performed at St George’s Hospital in London. In 1849 Harriet Tubman escapes from slavery in Maryland for the final time. She said “I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other.” In 1877 Thomas Edison records himself reciting “Mary had a little lamb”. Finally, in 1964 “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” 1st airs on TV. I looked through the who was born and who died on this date and couldn’t find someone to quote. Some days nothing jumps out of the lists. That means I get to pick a person and today, it’s Buddha. “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” That quote is enough. I will follow Buddha’s advice. Despite the chaos, I’m going to live this day as fully as I can. Abide
