February 28, 2024. I’ll start this post with a quote from Thomas Jefferson: “I bel3eve that every human mind feels pleasure in doing good to another.” I think our “plan for the day” should always include being kind to the people we meet. Our goal is happiness and the way we reach it is helping others. Moving on. Feb. 28 is Car Keys and Small Change Day, Inconvenience Yourself Day, National Chocolate Souffle Day, National Public Sleeping Day, National Science Day, National Tooth Fairy Day, and Pink Shirt Day. Onto history: On this day in 1646 a man named Roger Scott was arrested and stood trial in Massachusetts for sleeping in church. On this day in 1704 Indians attacked Deerfield, Massachusetts killing 40 and kidnapping 100. On this day in 1859 the Arkansas Legislature required free blacks to choose exile or slavery. On this day in 1924 the US invaded Honduras, again. We also invaded them in 1903, 1907, 1911, 1912, 1919, and 1925. The US population in 1940 was 131,669,275 with 12,865,518 African Americans (9.8%). On this day in 1983 the final episode of “M*A*S*H” was shown. It was directed by Alan Alda and titled “Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen”. Instead of using quotes from a dead person, I’ll use quotes from dead people about “kindness”. Aesop said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Lao Tzu said, “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” The Dalai Lama said, “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.” King Solomon said, “Kindness and faithfulness keep a king safe, through kindness his throne is made secure.” I’ll wrap this one up with Confucius who said, “To practice five things under all circumstances constitutes perfect virtue; these five are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness, and kindness.” Abide.
