It’s February 8th, 2024. It’s that time of day when I adjust my attitude to positive, be grateful for this life I live and get ready to take on whatever this day sends my way. All set! Carpe Diem. Today is Boy Scout Anniversary Day, Fat Thursday, Laugh and Get Rich Day, Molasses Bar Day, National Giving Hearts Day, National Kite Flying Day, Opera Day and Propose Day. Now let’s look for some interesting historical footnotes. On this day in 1587 Mary, Queen of Scots, was beheaded at the age of 44 after being convicted of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth I. On this day in 1807 the Battle of Eylau was fought between Napoleon and the Russian Empire. This was the 1st battle that Napoleon didn’t win. On this day in 1887 the Dawes Act went into effect authorizing the President of the United States to survey Indian tribal land, divide it into individual allotments and those Indians who accepted the allotment and lived separately from their tribe would become United States citizens. On this day in 1911 the US orchestrated the overthrow of President Miguel Devila of Honduras. On this day in 1920 Swiss men voted against women’s suffrage. On this day in 1963 the AFL’s Dallas Texans became the KC Chiefs. On this day in 1968 the Orangeburg Massacre took place when highway patrol officers killed 3 students and injured 27 who were demonstrating at the Sough Carolina State University. This was the first students killed by law enforcement officers in the US. Jules Verne will provide today’s quotes: He said, “Science, my lad, is made up of mistakes, but they are mistakes which it is useful to make, because they lead little by little to the truth.” “I believe that water will one day be employed as fuel, that hydrogen and oxygen which constitute it, used singly or together, will furnish an inexhaustible source of heat and light.” As a side note, GM and Ford are now working together to produce hydrogen fuel cells. I’ll end this post with a toast from Jules Verne: “And whichsoever way thou goest, may fortune follow.” Abide.
