It is now December 3, 2023. Yesterday was fun. I picked up a couple of new jokes that I can’t put in this post. I laughed a lot. It doesn’t get much better than that. If you didn’t have a good day yesterday, you might need to define what a good day is and then do that. Waiting for someone else to do something that makes your day good rarely works. December 3 is Advent Sunday, International Spirit of the Game Day, Let’s Hug Day, Make a Gift Day, National Apple Pie Day, National Green Bean Casserole Day, and National Roof Over Your Head Day. I love apple pie. Now some history: On this day in 1586 Sir Thomas Herriot introduced the potato to England. He had found them in Colombia. On this day in 1868 the 1st black people were placed on a trial jury in America. The charge was treason and the defendant was Jefferson Davis. On this day in 1911 Willis Carrier presented his theory to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on how to air condition buildings. The people of Florida perpetually thank him. On this day in 1948 the 1st woman army officer not in the medical corps was sworn in. On this day in 1956 Wilt chamberlain played his first college basketball game at the University of Kansas scoring 52 points and grabbing 31 rebounds in their 87-69 win against Northwestern. On this day in 1989 Soviet President Mikhal Gorbachev and President George H. W. Bush jointly declare the Cold War is over. Today’s dead person is the Scottish poet and author Robert Louis Stevenson who said, “Make the most of the best and the least of the worst.” “Everybody, soon or late, sits down to a banquet of consequences.”  “Make up your mind to be happy. Learn to find pleasure in simple things.” “Be what you are and become what you are capable of becoming.” “Keep busy at something; a busy person never has time to be unhappy.” “Since hate poisons the soul, don’t cherish enmities or grudges: avoid people who make you unhappy.” That’s an excellent quote to end on and something I’ve been doing for 40 or 50 years. Abide.
