This day is November 2, 2023. I’m going to start this post with a quote from Benjamin Franklin “If you would be loved, love, and be loveable.” That’s profound advice. We all want to be loved. Ben suggests that we become a person who is worthy of someone’s love. The Dude (Big Labowski) said, “Don’t be a dick.” I’ll do my best to follow Ben and the Dude’s advice today. Today is All Soul’s Day, Cookie Monster Day, International Stout Day, Look for Circles Day, National Cash Back Day, National Deviled Egg Day, National Men Make Dinner Day, Plan Your Epitaph Day, and Practice Being Psychic Day. Moving on to history: On this day in 1675 was the beginning of King Philip’s War also known as the First Indian War. King Philip was a Wampanoag Chief, and this War was a last-ditch effort to stop English settlement on native lands, now known as Rhode Island. This is the day in 1783 that General George Washington bid farewell to his army after the American Revolutionary War. On this day in 1859 abolitionist John Brown was found guilty of murder inciting slaves to revolt and treason against Virginia for his raid on Harpers Ferry Armory and sentenced to hang. On this day in 1898 cheerleading begins as Johnny Campbell led a crowd cheering the University of Minnesota football team. All the cheerleaders were male. On this day in 1947 Howard Hughes fly the “Spruce Goose”, a huge wooden airplane for the first and only time. On this day in 1948 President Harry Truman was re-elected in an upset victory over Republican candidate Thomas E. Dewey. This is the day in 1960 that Penguin Books was cleared of obscenity for publishing DH Lawrence’s “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.” Speaking of Love, I’ll end with quotes on the subject: Lao Tzu said, “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” “We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only though our love and friendships can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not alone.” Aristotle said, “Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.” Albert Einstein said, “You can’t blame gravity for falling in love.” The Dalai Lama said, “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” Audrey Hepburn said, “The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.” Abide.
