September 27, 2023 is here. It’s early in the morning but I’m awake. It’s time to adjust my attitude to positive and see what new stuff I can learn about today. I’m 78 and still trying to grow my brain a little bit, day by day. In the lyrics of Jimmy Buffett, “I’m growing older but not up”. Today is Ancestor Appreciation Day, Banned Websites Awareness Day, Crush a Can Day, Google’s Birthday, National Chocolate Milk Day, National Corned Beef Hash Day, National Women’s Health & Fitness Day and World Tourism Day. Onto the history of this day: In 1066 William the Conqueror set sail from Normandy to conquer England. On this day in 1290 an earthquake in the Gulf of Chihli near China was reported to have killed 100,000. On this day in 1779 John Adams was appointed to negotiate the Revolutionary War’s peace terms with Great Britain. On this day in 1864 the Centralia Massacre happened when Confederate guerrillas led by William T. Anderson and Jessie James attacked a train in Centralia executing 24 Union soldiers. Later on the same day they would engage the newly formed 39th Missouri Infantry killing 123 out of its 147 solders. This is the day in 1905 when Albert Einstein formula ‘E=mc2’ was published. On this day in 1908 the 1st Model T Ford left the Piquette Plant in Detroit, MI. This is the day in 1954 that ‘The Tonight Show’ premiered. On the same day school integration began in Washington D.C. and Baltimore public schools. On this day in 2009 the NY Times columnist William Safire lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at 79. He said, “Never assume the obvious is true.” “The right to do something does not mean that doing it is right.” “As long as one American is hungry…. then we have unfinished business in this country.” “Last, but not least, avoid cliches like the plague.” “Took me a while to get to the point today, but that is because I did not know what the point was when I started.” That last quote resonates with me writing this post. Abide.
