It is now the morning after the last party. September 23, 2023. I’m sure that Jimmy would be happy with our celebration of his life and music. Life is short. We’re only here for an instant. Our stay feels longer by how we use the time we have. Since I’m happy now, I’ll continue to do what makes me happy. For me, that’s enough. There are over 20 events that can be celebrated today. Here are a few of them: Autumnal Equinox (1st day of Autumn), Celebrate Bi-Sexuality (nope), Dogs in Politics Day, Fish Amnesty Day?, International Day of Sign Languages, Kids Day, National Checkers Day, National Pot Pie Day, National Snack Stick Day, Proposal Day, and Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day. Just because a list is long doesn’t mean the list is good. Now some history: On this day in 1387 the most extravagant medieval English feast ever recorded took place. On the menu were 14 salted oxen, 120 sheep, 1,200 pigeons and 11,000 eggs. On this day in 1779 John Paul Jones yelled “I have not yet begun to fight”. He went on to defeat the British frigate. On this day in 1821 Greek forces massacred 30,000 Turks at Tripolitsa during the Greek War of Independence. Wow. On this day in 1875 Billy the Kid was arrested for the 1st time and jailed for receiving clothing stolen from a Chinese laundry. He escaped two days later. On this day in 1932 the Kingdoms of Nejd and Hejaz became Saudi Arabia. On this day in 1941 the first gas murder experiments were conducted at Auschwitz. On this day in 1955 an all white jury found Roy Brant and john Milan not guilty for the murder of black teenager Emmet Till. They later sold an interview admitting the murder. Sigmund Freud died on this day in 1939 and will provide a few quotes to end this post with. “In the small matters, trust the mind, in the large ones, the heart.” One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.” “History is just new people making old mistakes.” “Time spent with cats is never wasted.” “Where does a thought go when it’s forgotten?” I’ve never wondered that before. Abide.
