September 11, 2023. Yesterday I saw an interesting video clip on Facebook about kindness questions a parent asked his children each night at bedtime. “Did you see any acts of kindness today?” “Did anyone treat you with kindness today?” “Were you kind to anyone today?” He conditioned them to be kind people. What you think and what you do makes you the person you are. Pretty cool. Wish I had known this 50 years ago but it’s never too late to start being a better person. Today is 9/11 Remembrance Day, I Want to Start my Own Business Day, I’m on Top of it Day, Make Your Bed Day, National Emergency Responder Day, Odd Day (9 11 23), and Women’s Baseball Day. September is also National Blueberry Popsicle month. Now some history: On this day in 1503 Michelangelo began sculpting the 12 Apostles for the Cathedral of Florence. Unfortunately, only 1, St. Matthew, was partially finished. On this day in 1773 Benjamin Franklin wrote “There never was a good war or bad peace.” On this day in 1777 at the Battle of Brandywine, Pennsylvania, the Americans lost to the British and Polish soldier Casimir Pulaski saved the life of George Washington. Pulaski has a square named after him in Savanah. GA. On this day in 1941 FDR ordered the US Navy to sink any Axis ships found in American waters. On this day in 1959 Congress passed a bill authorizing food stamps for poor Americans. On this day in 1961 Hurricane Carla struck near Port O’Connor Texas with winds of 175 mph. This is the day in 1967 that the Carol Burnett Show premiered. I’m going with plan B today for my quotes. I’ve searched on “kindness” and here’s what I found: Lao Tzu said, “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” The Dalai Lama said, “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.” I’ll end with Scott Adams who said, “Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” Abide.
