It’s Labor Day, September 4th, 2023. Without the people who work everyday for a paycheck, there would be no wealth in America. They deserve more than they receive. Enough said. The fact that it’s a national holiday doesn’t mean a lot when you’re retired. I get to do what I want today. Just like every other day. My only responsibility is to myself. I plan to be happy. Hope that’s your plan too. Today, besides Labor Day, we can celebrate Mouthguard Day, National Macadamia Nut Day, National Wildlife Day, Newspaper Carrier Day, and World Sexual Health Day. It’s also National Biscuit and Gravy Week. Moving on: On this day 1651 King Charles II of England, on the run from a mob of Parliamentarians, disguises himself as a countryman by rubbing his hands and face with soot. On this day in 1807 Robert Fulton began operating a scheduled passenger service on his steamboat between New York and Albany which is over 150 miles away. On this day in 1885 the 1st cafeteria opened in NYC. In 1886 on this day Apache Chief Geronimo surrendered ending the last major US-Indian war. On this day in 1949 Marie Robie sunk a 393-yard hole-in-one on the first hole at Furnace Brook Golf Course located in Wollaston Ma which is still in operation today. The 1st hole has been changed and is only 371 yards today. On this day in 1957 Orval Faubus, Governor of Arkansas called out the National Guard to prevent 9 black students from entering Little Rock’s Central High School. President Eisenhower then ordered the 101st Airborne Division to escort them into the school. They did. Today I will feature the quotes of the German philosopher Albert Schweitzer who said, “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing you will be successful.” “Eventually all things fall into place. Until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moments, and know everything happens for a reason.” “If you own something you cannot give away, then you don’t own it, it owns you.” I’ll end with “The only thing of importance, when we depart, will be the traces of love we have left behind.” Abide.
