It is Sunday, August 20, 2023. It will be a little like yesterday with some slight variations. I’m looking forward to living it. If I start this day with pleasant anticipation of what follows, it will likely be a better day. Anticipation usually enhances the experience. This is International Day of Medical Transporters, Lemonade Day, National Bacon Lover’s Day, National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day, World Mosquito Day, and National Radio Day. I love bacon, chocolate and any pie. I’m good to go. Now some history to remind ourselves of what our ancestors did: On this day in 1191 the Massacre at Ayyadieh took place during the 3rd crusade. King Ricard I had 3,000 Muslim prisoners which he wanted to trade to the Muslim leader Saladin who had 1,600 Christian prisoners. King Richard I also wanted 100,000 gold pieces. The deal was struck but Saladin failed to act on it, pissing off the King so he had his 3,000 prisoners beheaded on a hill where the Muslims could watch. Saladin followed suit and killed the 1,600 Christians. On this day in 1612 nine Pendle witches were hanged at Gallows Hill in Lancaster, England. On this day in 1619 the 1st recorded African Americans landed in North America at Point Comfort, Virginia and were sold to the highest bidder. This is the day in 1866 that President Andrew Johnson formally declared the Civil War over. On this day in 1900 America’s Great White Fleet arrived in Sydney, Australia. 221 sailors deserted to remain in Australia. On this day in 1920 the American Professional Football Association formed and installed Jim Thorpe as President. It later was renamed to become the National Football League or the NFL. On this day in 1964 President Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act to fight poverty. The Peace Corps and Operation Head Start still survive. Today we will visit with the B.K.S. Lyengar, Indian Yoga master, who said, “We can rise above our limitations, only once we recognize them.” “Only the crazy ones and the passionate ones accomplish anything in life.” “The lotus grows in muddy water but this flower does not show any trace of it: So we have to live in the world.” “Do not stop trying just because perfection eludes you.” Last one: “when you see a mistake in somebody else, try to find if you are making the same mistake.” Abide
