It has become the 25th day of July. I’m doing my best to enjoy the heat wave we’re having along with most of the US and Europe. Odds are, it will be hotter next year. Since I can’t do much about it, I’m not going to worry much about it. I do hope the people who can do something about it, do. Today is Culinarians Day, Health and Happiness With Hypnosis Day, International Red Shoe Day, National Carousel Day, National Hire a Veteran Day, National Wine and Cheese Day, Thread a Needle Day, and (drum roll)… National Hot Fudge Sundae Day!! I recommend an afternoon trip to the Russell Stover’s outlet shop in Wildwood. Onto the history portion of this post. On this day in 1446 the foundation stone was laid for King’s College Chapel in Cambridge. The building which is one of England’s finest medieval structures was completed in 1515. In 1510 the Spanish conquest of Tripoli began. 3,000 of the inhabitants were killed and 5,000 enslaved. On this day in 1722 the Three Years War began along the Maine and Massachusetts border. It was a series of battles between the New England Colonies and the Wabanaki confederacy (Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, Penobscot, and Abenaki tribes). On this day in 1850 gold was discovered in Oregon on the Rogue River. On this day in 1860 the 1st US college billiard match was held (Harvard vs Yale). On this day in 1943 Benito Mussolini was dismissed as Italian Premier and arrested. This is the day in 1946 that Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis did their first show as a comedy team. In 1965 Bob Dylan was booed by sections of the crowd at the Newport Folk Festival for performing with an electric guitar. Today’s wisdom comes from the legendary golfer, Ben Hogan, who said, “The most important shot in golf is the next one.” “As you walk down the fairway of life you must smell the roses, for you only get to play one round.” “May the ball lie in green pastures, and not in still waters.” “I never played a round when I didn’t learn something new about the game.” I’ll wrap this up with a quote from Ben that my dad often used: “Your name is the most important thing you own. Don’t ever do anything to disgrace or cheapen it.” Good advice. Abide.
