July 24th, 2023 is here. I’ll start today’s post with a quote from Peter Hiltz who said, “we are all bit players in other people’s plays.” I’m in yours, you’re in mine, we’re in other people’s. I’m doing my best to play my small part well. It isn’t all about me. My bit part is making the people I come in contact with today feel good. Today is Amelia Earhart Day, Cousins Day, National Drive-Thru Day, National Tell an Old Joke Day, National Thermal Engineer Day, Pioneer Day, and my pick: National Tequila Day. Now some history: On this day in 1567 Mary Queen of Scots was forced to abdicate making her 1-year-old son King James VI of Scots. On this day in 1660 the Great Fire took place in Constantinople. 280,000 wooden houses were destroyed with a death toll of around 40,000. On this day in 1701 French trader Antoine de la Monthe Cadillac founded a trading post which is now known as the city of Detroit. On this day in 1823 slavery was abolished in Chile. This is the day in 1847 that Brigham Young and his Mormon followers arrived at Salt Lake City, Utah. On this day in 1877 federal troops were used for the 1st time to combat strikers. On this day in 1911 American explorer Hiram Bingham discovered Machu Picchu. On this day in 1915 the excursion ship Eastland capsized in Lake Michigan, 852 die. On this day in 1941 Nazis killed the entire Jewish population of Grodz, Lithuania which was around 800 plus 100 non-Jews who tried to help them. On this day in 1974 the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Nixon must turn over the Watergate tapes. This day’s insights come from Albert Ellis, a psychologist who died on this day in 2007 at the age of 93. Albert said, “The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own.” “You mainly feel the way you think.” “Convince yourself that worrying about many situations will make them worse rather than improve them.” “You have only to exist as you do and to live your life as best you can.” I’ll end with this gem: “Worrying about dying will hardly help you live.” Abide.
