This day is known as April 13, 2023. We are getting some rain today which is a welcome break from the day-after-day sunshine and warm temperatures. I am particularly happy to be able to live this day, just like I was yesterday. I hope to have several thousand more. I’ve already lived 28,440 days. My goal is 36,501 but I’m sure that when I get there, I’ll want a few more. That’s the future and today is the present which happens to be National Make Lunch Count Day, National Peach Cobbler Day, Scrabble Day, Support Teen Literature Day, and Thomas Jefferson Day (his birthday). Onto the history part of this post: On this day in 1796 the first elephant arrived in the US from India. This is the day in 1860 that the 1st Pony Express rider reached Sacramento, CA. In 1861 on this day Fort Sumter surrendered to Confederate troops after 34 hours of bombardment. On this day in 1911 the House of Representatives voted to institute direct elections of Senators to Congress. On this day in 1934, a census reported that 4.7 million families were receiving welfare payments. This is the day in 1943 that FCR dedicated the Jefferson Memorial. On this day in 1944 Transport #71 departed France with 1,500 Jews headed for the Auschwitz concentration camp. 91 survived. On this day in 1957 Saturday postal delivery was temporarily halted due to lack of funds. In 1963 on this day Pete Rose tripled for his 1st major league base hit. In 1964 on this day New Zealander Colin Bosher sheared a record 565 sheep in 1 workday. Wow. Since it’s Thomas Jefferson day I’ll use him as my quote source. Thomas said, “The end of democracy and the defeat of the American Revolution will occur when government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed incorporations.” “To learn, you have to listen. To improve, you have to try.” “Equal rights for all, special privileges for none.” “The government you elect is the government you deserve.” I’ll wrap this us with “May I never got too busy in my own affairs that I fail to respond to the needs of others with kindness and compassion.” The End. Abide.
