April 10th, 2023 has arrived. I’m grateful for the opportunity to live another day. I woke up in a warm bed, in a house I own that has plenty of food with money in my bank account. I’m happy being who I am. That’s an essential component of happiness. Today is ASPCA Day, Dyngus Day, Easter Monday, Encourage a Young Writer Day, Global Work From Home Day, Golfer’s Day, National Cinnamon Crescent Day, National Farm Animals Day, National Hug Your Dog Day, Siblings Day, and Safety Pin Day. I’ll celebrate my siblings because I’ve got to great brothers. Now to put today in context, here are a few historical footnotes: On this day in 1516 the first Jewish ghetto was founded when Venice compelled Jews to live in a specific area. On this day in 1790 the US Patent system was formed. On this day in 1815 Mount Tambora in the Dutch East Indies erupted killing 71,000 and causing a global volcanic winter. In 1825 on this day the first hotel in Hawaii opened. On this day in 1849 the safety pin was patented by Walter Hunt who sold the rights to it for $400. On this day in 1869 Congress increased the number of Supreme Court judges from 7 to 9. This is the day in 1012 that the Titanic left Southampton on her1st and only voyage. On this day in 1938 New York made a test for syphilis mandatory in order to get a marriage license. On this day in 1957 my favorite movie, “12 Angry Men” starting Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb was released. Today’s quotes come from the poet and philosopher Khalil Gibran who died on this day in 1931. He said, “Our anxiety does not come from thinking about the future, but from wanting to control it.” “Keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life.” “And God said, Love your enemy, and I obeyed him and loved myself.” “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention.” “Our worst fault is our preoccupation with the faults of others.” Do yourself a favor and google “Khalil Gibran Quotes” and do some reading and thinking. You’ll be glad you did. Abide.
