This day is called March 12, 2023. Yesterday I wrote a new song and one of the verses is “If you want to be like me / and live by my philosophy / Decide that less / is really more / and fun is all you’re living for”. In the words of Epictetus, “Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.” We all know people that are never satisfied and as a result, are never happy. Don’t be that kind of person. I’ll stop preaching. Today is Check Your Batteries Day, Girl Scout Day, National Alfred Hitchcock Day, National Baked Scallops Day, National Plant a Flower Day, National Working Moms Day, The Start of Daylight Saving Time, and World Day Against Cyber Censorship. Now some history: On this day in 1350 the city of Orvieto Italy proclaims that it will behead and burn Jewish-Christian couples. On this day in 1609 Bermuda became an English colony. This is the day in 1773 that Jeanne Baptiste Pointe de Sable founded a settlement which is now known as Chicago. On this day in 1884 Mississippi established the 1st US state college for women. This is the day in 1894 that Coca-Cola was first sold in bottles. This is the day that FDR held his first “fireside chat”. On this day in 1945 the state of New York became the 1st state to prohibit discrimination by race and creed in employment. This is the day in 1951 that the comic strip “Dennis the Menace” first appeared. The dead person for today is Terry Patchett who was an English humorist, satirist and author who died in 2015. Terry said, “Please give us a simple answer, so that we don’t have to think, because if we think, we might find answers that don’t fit the way we want the world to be.” You should think about that one. Terry also said, “You were so worried about legal and illegal that you never stopped to think about whether it was right or wrong.” Another one to think about given the laws being passed each day. I’ll end with “Always remember that the crowd that applauds your coronation is the same crowd that will applaud your beheading. People like a show.” Have an excellent day. Abide.
