On this day in 1570 Spanish viceroy Alva banished Zutphen City’s only physician, Joost Switzer, “because he is a Jew”. On this day in 1656 a Spanish galleon loaded with gold and jewels returning to Span sunk off the coast of the Bahamas. Only 45 of the 650 people on board survived. The rest were eaten by sharks. Yikes! This is the day in 1885 that the first appendectomy was performed in America. This is the day that Topsy the elephant was electrocuted at Coney Island.
