December 10, 2022 is here. We have 21 more days left before 2022 fades into the mist of history. I’m ready for a new year. This one has had its ups and downs. Most years do. It’s not the “downs” we encounter but how we greet them and deal with them that matters. Writing this post is one of the techniques I use to improve my ability to cope. Today is Dewey Decimal System Day (will librarians throw a party?), Festival for the Souls of Dead Whales, Gingerbread Decorating Day, Human Rights Day, International Shareware Day, Nobel Prize Day and my pick, National Lager Day. Hard to beat a cold beer on a warm winter day in Florida. On this day in 1520 Martin Luther publicly burned a papal edict demanding he recant. He didn’t care much for Catholics. On this day in 1960 the Massachusetts Bay became the first American colony to issue paper money. This is the day in 1799 that the metric system was adopted in France. On this day in 1864 General Sherman’s army reached Atlanta and began a 12- day siege. This is day in 1869 that Women suffrage was granted in the Wyoming Territory. On this day in 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt became the 1st American to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. On this day in 1936 Edward VIII signed the Instrument of Abdication, giving up the British throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. On this day in 1948 the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It’s a remarkable document that’s worth the 5 minutes it will take you to read it. Today’s 1st quote source is Richard Pryor. He said, “I had to stop drinkin, cuz I got tired of waking up in my car driving ninety” and “You don’t get to be old bein’ no fool.” Next is author Damon Runyon who died in 1946. Damon said, “Life is tough, and it’s really tough when you’re stupid.” The last for today is Luigi Pirandello. He was an Italian novelist and poet who won a Nobel Prize and died in 1936. He said “My opinion is a view I hold until… well, until I find something that changes it.” Enough for today. Abide.
