This day is called December 6, 2022. One of my favorite Winnie the Pooh cartoons is: “What day is it?” asked Pooh. “It’s today.” Squeaked Piglet. “My favorite day.” Said Pooh. He’s got a good attitude. He is mostly interested in his friends and food, and especially honey. And, most of all, the Pooh in content with what he is and has. We should all be more like Winnie the Pooh. Today is Miner’s Day, Mitten Tree Day, National Gazpacho Day, National Microwave Oven Day, National Pawnbrokers Day, Put on Your Own Shoes Day, Saint Nicolos Day, and World Trick Shot Day. Not the greatest list of events I’ve seen. Moving on. On this day in 1240 Mongols led by Batu Khan destroy Kyiv after an 8-day siege. Out of 50,000 people in the city, only 2,000 survive. On this day in 1732 the 1st play in America was acted by professional players in New York. On this day in 1849 Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery for the 2nd and last time. On this day in 1862 President Lincoln ordered the hanging of 39 Santee Sioux Indians. He also commuted the death sentence of 260 Santee Indians. The Santee uprising was caused by their abysmal treatment and was seen as having some justification. On this day in 1912 China voted for universal human rights. On this day in 1021 the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed. Ireland received dominion status and partitioning created Northern Ireland. This is the day in 1947 that the Everglades National Park was dedicated by President Truman. Today is not a good day for dead people quotes. So, I’ll end where I started. Winnie the Pooh said, “If you live to be a hundred, I hope I Ilive to be a hundred minus one day, so that I never have to live a day without you.” “You can’t stay in your corner of the forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” “Rivers know this: There is no hurry. We shall get there some day.” I’ll wrap this one up with a quote from Piglet who said, “I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” Me too. Abide.
