The sun will soon rise on December 4, 2022. While I was waiting for the coffee to brew, I read some of the Facebook posts. Most of them are fine. Some are venting posts from pissed off people. Those I often snooze for 30 days because life’s too short to be around pissed off people. If I can’t fix something I think is wrong, I just move on and try to leave the frustration behind. That’s Buddha’s 3rd Noble Truth. Today is Cabernet Franc Day (wine), International Cheetah Day, National Cookie Day, National Dice Day, National Sock Day, Santa’s List Day, Wear Brown Shoes Day, and Wildlife Conservation Day. I’m going to have some Cabernet today. Good for the heart and helps the attitude. Now some history to put the present into context. On this day in 1154 Adrian IV was elected Pope. He was the only Englishman to become pontiff. This is the day in 1619 that 38 colonists from Berkeley Parish, England disembarked in Virginia and gave things to God. It is considered by many to be the first Thanksgiving in the Americas. In 1829 the British outlawed “suttee” in India. This was the Hindu practice of the widow burning herself to death on her husband’s funeral pyre. I’m betting there were a lot of older Indian women happy with the British decision. On this day in 1908 the world’s ten largest maritime nations met in a conference in London to agree on the rules for blockade, convoys, and seizure of contraband. On this day in 1915 Henry Ford’s peace ship, Oscar II, sailed for Europe “to get the boys out of the trenches by Christmas”. On this day in 1945 the Senate approved US participation in the United Nations. In 1954 on this day the first Burger Kind opened in Miami, FL. In 1956 an impromptu recording session with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash took place at Sun Studios in Memphis, TN. Today’s dead person is Thomas Hobbes who was an English philosopher who died in 1679. He said, “If nobody makes you do it, it counts as fun.” “Life is nasty, brutish, and short.” Remember when Mr. Hobbs lived. Last one for today is “It’s not the pace of life I mind. It’s the sudden stop at the end.” Abide.
