November 21st, 2022 is here. The countdown to Thanksgiving dinner has begun because you can begin to make some of the side dishes today. My countdown started last week when I cut up and sous vided the turkey. If you want to know about this cooking method, search on YouTube. Thanksgiving brings back loads of good memories for me. It is family and food. The only bad memory is Lutefisk. I hope to add to good memories this year. But, that’s in the future and today we can celebrate Alascattalo Day (Alaskan celebration of the mythical crossbreeding of a moose and a walrus), False Confession Day, National Gingerbread Day, National Red Mitten Day, National Stuffing Day, World Hello Day, and Pumpkin Pie Day. Now some history: On this day in 1789 North Carolina ratified the constitution and became the 12th state. On this day in 1817 US soldiers attacked the Miccosukee Tribe village and started what becomes known as the First Seminole War. On this day in 1902 the 1st night football game was played. Philadelphia Athletics beat the Kanaweola Athletic Club 39 to 0. This is the day in 1931 that the film “Frankenstein” was released. On this day in 1946 Harry Truman became the first President to travel in a submarine. On this day in 1959 Jack Benny (violin) and Vice President Richard Nixon (piano) played a duet. It’s on YouTube. Today’s dead person is Harold Ramis who was played Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters, was a co-writer of Animal House and died in 2014. Here are a few of his observations: “People spend their whole lives struggling to get what they think they want, and even if they get it, they find that it’s either not what they wanted, or it comes with so many unwanted consequences.” “Find the most talented person in the room, and if it’s not you, go stand next to him. Hang out with him. Try to be helpful.” Last one: “When you’re young and you see the extent and depth of the world’s hypocrisy, it’s fun to go after it. But by the time you’re sixty, it’s so commonplace. What’s the point in ridiculing people anymore?” Me too Harold, me too. Abide.
