Today is November 17th, 2022. I have not browsed the headlines yet so I have no idea what the 24/7 “news” has decided I should be outraged about this morning. Whatever “it” is won’t raise my blood pressure because I don’t care. I may care later but not now. Right now, I’m more interested in the fact that today is Electronic Greeting Card Day, Great American Smokeout, Homemade Bread Day, International Guinness World Records Day, National Baklava Day, National Butter Day, Use Less Stuff Day, World Philosophy Day, and Nouveau Beaujolais Day which is my pick. The first wine of the season is a reason to celebrate. Now some history: In 1278, 680 Jews were arrested in England for counterfeiting coins. 293 were hanged. On this day in 1774 the First City Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry was formed. It is still active today (National Guard) and is the oldest military unit in America. In 1873 on this day the cities of Buda and Pest unite to form the capital of Hungary. This is the day in 1913 that the first ship went through the Panama Canal. On this sad day in 1928 Notre Dame finally lost a football game at home after 23 years. This is the longest winning streak in football history. On this day in 1940 the Green Bay Packers became the first team to travel by plane. Today’s dead person is Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. She died on this day in 1796. Catherine said, “One does not always do the best there is. One does the best one can.” “The more a man knows, the more he forgives.” “I like to praise and reward loudly, to blame quietly.” “Don’t worry about things you cannot alter.” I’ll end this post with that quote because it ties in so well to where we started. If I can’t alter something, what good is my caring about it? Abide.
