This area of time/space is known as October 17, 2022. I have no big plans, nothing I have to do, no agenda what-so-ever. I get to fill up the next 16 hours with whatever I decide to do. I may write a poem, play my ukulele, shoot pool, cook a gourmet meal, drink some rum, read a book, plan a trip, or do something else. What fun it is to be retired. Having a good attitude is easy. Today is Black Poetry Day, Forgive an Ex Day, Four Prunes Day, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Mulligan Day, National Pasta Day, Pay Back a Friend Day, and Wear something Gaudy Day. Now some historical events which happened on this day. In the year 79 Mt. Vesuvius erupted burying the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae. On this day in 1483 Tomas de Torquemada was appointed inquisitor-general of Span. He was known for his brutality and is credited for starting the Spanish inquisition which would last until 1834. On this day in 1787 Bost African Americans petitioned the legislature for equal school facilities. On this day in 1894 the Ohio national guard killed 3 lynchers while rescuing a black man they were trying to lynch. This is the day in 1931 that Al Capone was convicted of 5 of 23 counts of tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in jail. In 1933 on this day Albert Einstein arrived in the US as a refugee from Nazi Germany. In 1957 on this day “Jailhouse Rock” starring Elvis Presley premiered in Memphis, TN. The first dead person who will provide the quotes for today is S.J. Perelman, who was a humorist and screen writer. He died in 1979. He observed “The main obligation is to amuse yourself” I agree. Next, it’s Norm Macdonald’s birthday. He died too soon at the age of 61. Norm said, “Note to self: no matter how bad life gets, there’s always beer.” I agree. Last is the author Arthur Miller who was born on this day in 1915. Arthur said, “No one wants the truth if it is inconvenient.” Enough for this post. Have an excellent, do what you want to, day. Abide.
