I was happy to see September arrive and happy to say goodbye. Welcome to October. The Earth will travel 48 million miles of time/space this month. In October 4.5 million people will take their last breath and 11.5 million will be born. America’s birth and death rates are nearly equal. We’re not growing. That’s the big picture. My plan for this month is to keep doing what I’ve been doing. October 1st is Astronomy Day, Homemade Cookie Day, International Coffee Day, International Day of Older People, International Raccoon Appreciation Day, Less Than Perfect Day, National Black Dog Day, National Hair Day and World Vegetarian Day. Now to history. I learn something new every day I write this post. On this day in 331 BC Alexander the Great defeated Darius LLL of Persia in the Battle of Gaugamela. Darius had an army of 120,000 and Alexander had one of 47,000. Alexander won. His infantry had longer spears. On this day in 1800 Spain ceded Louisiana to France. On this day in 1867 Karl Marx published “Das Kapital” which was his description of the capitalist system, it’s instability and tendency to self-destruct. This is the day in 1888 that National Geographic magazine was 1st published. In 1890 on this day Congress created the Weather Bureau. In 1908 on this day Ford Motor Company introduced the Model T for $825 ($23,000 in 2022 dollars). On this day in 1949 the People’s Republic of China was proclaimed by Mao Zedong. Today’s quotes come from E.B. White who was the author that wrote “Charlotte’s Web”. E.B. said, “Prejudice is a great time saver. You can form opinions without having to get the facts.” “Luck is not something you can mention in the presence of self-made men.” “I have one share in corporate Earth, and I am nervous about the management.” I’ll end with “Old age is a special problem for me because I’ve never been able to shed the mental image I have of myself – a lad of about 19.” Abide.
