Welcome to September 7th, 2022. Are you going to learn something new today? For me the answer is always “Yes”. I don’t know if I’m average or not. Does everyone look for the answer to a question they have? I just spent a few minutes trying to find the answer and it turns out that everyone should and “most” people do. I feel sorry for those that will end this day with nothing new learned. Moving on. Today is Google Commemoration Day, Grandma Moses Day, National Acorn Squash Day, National Feel the Love Day, National Grateful Patient Day, National Neither Snow nor Rain Day, Salami Day, and National Beer Lover’s Day. The top choice is obvious. Now let’s see what our ancestors did on this day. In 1630 Boston was founded. In 1812 on this day the Battle of Borodino was fought between Napoleon and the Russian army. This was the most ferocious battle of the Napoleonic ear and 70,000 were killed. This is the day in 1876 of the disastrous bank robbery by the James gang in Northfield, Minnesota which resulted in the death and capture of gang members. A movie was made about it. In 1902 on this day, the entire country of Australia observed a ‘day of humiliation’ and prayed for rain because of a terrible drought. The rain began on September 10th. This is the day in 1915 that the Raggedy Ann doll was patented by Johnny Gruelle. The Hoover Dam on the Colorado River became operational on this day in 1936. Today the first quote comes from Mac Miller who was a rapper who died too soon in 2018 at the age of 26. Mac said, “Enjoy the best things in your life cuz you ain’t gonna get to live it twice.” Next is Karen Blixen who was a writer that died in 1962 and said, “The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.” I’ll end with James Clavelle who was also a writer who died in 1994. His quote is profound: “T think bad thoughts is really the easiest thing in the world. If you leave your mind to itself, it will spiral down into ever increasing unhappiness. To think good thoughts, however, requires effort. This is one of the things that discipline, and training is all about.” Abide.
