August 31st, 2022 is here. It is the end of the 50 million miles Earth has traveled this month. It’s been a smooth ride for me. While not filled with “make memories” excitement, I did manage to make some of the best pizza of my life. Now to our history of this day. On this day in 1422, Henry VL became King of England at the age of 9 months. This is the day in 1881 that the 1st recorded earthquake occurred in the Eastern US. It happened in Charleston SC and 110 people died. This is the day in 1888 that Jack the Rippers first victim was found in Whitechapel in London’s East End. In 1911 on this day the “Sullivan Act” went into effect. This law required a license for firearms small enough to be concealed. On this day in 1920 Belgium began paying old age pensions. This is the day in 1965 that congress established the Department of Housing & Urban Development. The first person to die on this date is Princess Diana who said, “Being a princess isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.” Next is the French poet Charles Baudelaire (1867) who said, “there is no sweeter pleasure than to surprise a man by giving him more than he hopes for.” I’ll end with David Frost (2013) who observed “Being upbeat is the key to life” and “Love is staying up all night with a sick child – or a healthy adult.” Abide.
