Welcome to August 23rd, 2022. It doesn’t take me very long each morning to generate the feeling of gratitude. All I need to do is to think about where I am, what I have, and my family and friends. Adjusting my attitude to ‘positive’ is the best way I’ve found to enjoy each new day. This one happens to be Buttered Corn Day, Cuban Sandwich Day, Hug Your Sweetheart Day, National Cheap Flight Day, Ride the Wind Day (hot air balloons), and National Sponge Cake Day. Now let’s see what happened on this day: In the year 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted on the feast day of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, and destroyed Pompeii. This is the day in 1305 that Scottish patriot William Wallace was executed for high treason. On this day in 1617 the first one-way street opened in London. In 1789, during the French Revolution, the National Assembly proclaimed freedom of religion. This is the day in 1904 that automobile tire chains were patented. On this day in 1917 a race riot in Houston kills 2 blacks and 11 whites. On this day in 1942 the last cavalry charge in history took place when the Italian Savoia Cavalleria charged the Soviet infantry. The cavalry won, but not by much. The people who died in this day begin with William Wallace who was drawn and quartered which isn’t a good way to go. He said, “We all end up dead, it’s just a question of how and why.” Next is Rudolph Valentino who said, “Women are not in love with me but with the picture of me on the screen. I am merely the ccanvas upon which the women paint their dreams.” I’ll wrap this post up with a quote from Oscar Hammerstein II who wrote this lyric, “When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad.” Good advice. Abide.
