Welcome to August 10th, 2022. You have another chance to be a better person than you were yesterday. For most of us, being a better person is pretty easy because we don’t spend a lot of time trying to be better. Wish me luck. I’m going to try. Today is National Lazy Day, National Psychiatric Technician Appreciation Day, National S’mores Day, National Shapewear Day, National Spoil Your Dog Day, Smithsonian Day, and World Lion Day. Lazy Day wins. The first historical footnote today is from 1743 when the earliest recorded prize fighting rules were established. This is the day in 1776 that America’s Declaration of Independence reached London. On this day in 1792 a large insurrection against the French monarchy occurred in Paris. This is the day in 1821 that Missouri was admitted to the Union as the 24th state. On this day in 1827 a race riot in Cincinnati resulted in 1,000 blacks moving to Canada. In 1833 on this day Chicago incorporated. It was a village of around 200 people. On this day in 1889 Dan Rylands patented the screw cap. On this day in 1897 German chemist Felix Hoffman synthesized acetylsalicylic acid which would be patented by Bayer under the name “aspirin”. This is the day in 1960 that Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “Psycho” premiered in Los Angeles. Today there’s not a lot of interesting quotes from people who died on this date but there are a few who were born on August 10t. My pick is Jimmy Dean. Jimmy said, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adust my sails to always reach my destination.” “Be yourself. Because if people don’t like you as you are, they’re not going to like you as somebody you’re trying to be.” Last one is excellent advice: “Do what you say you’re going to do. And try to do it a little bit better than you said you would.” Abide.
