The 9th day of August has arrived. When I woke up this morning, I realized that I don’t have anything to worry about. I’m sure I could manufacture a concern or two, but I’ve leaned how not to do that. It’s a great way to start a new, once in your lifetime, day which happens to be Book Lover’s Day, International Coworking Day, International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, National Hand Holding Day, National Polka Day, and National Rice Pudding Day. Now some history. On this day in 378 the Roman army was defeated in the Battle of Adrianople by the Goths. Rome lost 10,000 troops on this day. On this day in 1483, the Sistine Chapel opened. On this day in 1803, Robert Fulton tested his steam powered paddleboat on the river Seine. It sank. This is the day in 1842 that the Webster-Ashburton Treaty was signed, and the border of the US and Canada was established. On this day in 1910, Chicago resident Alva Fisher received a US patent for an electric washing machine. On this day in 1944, Smokey Bear became the spokesman for the US Forest Service. He is named after NYC fireman Smokey Joe Martin. This is the day in 1945 that we dropped the second atomic bomb (Fat Boy) on Nagasaki Japan. Today we will visit the grave of Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead who died in 1995. Here are some of his quotes: “You ain’t gonna learn what you don’t wanna know.” “Too much of a good thing is just about right.” “Truth is something you stumble into when you think you’re going someplace else.” “Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.” I’ll end with this one: “Magic is what we do, music is how we do it.” You might want to go to YouTube and play a few of Jerry’s songs. I suggest “Truckin” from the “Skeletons From The Closet” album. Abide.
