August 3rd is now here. Yesterday’s decision by the voters in conservative Kansas to keep abortion legal will make the November mid-term even more interesting. The next three months should be fun to watch. As the late Doris Day sang, “Que Sera, Sera” (Whatever will be, will be). This day’s choices are few: Airplane Crop Duster Day, Clean Your Floors Day, Ester Day, Grab Some Nuts Day, and National Watermelon Day. Now allow me to provide some context to what is happening now. On this day in 1492 Columbus set sail for the “Indies” on this first voyage. On this day in 1797 Emperor Francis, I permitted Jews who served in the military to marry non-Jews. This is the day in 1852 that the America’s first intercollegiate sporting event took place. The Harvard heavyweight rowing crew beat Yale by 2 lengths over a 2-mile course. On this day in 1882 the US Congress passed the 1st law restricting immigration. This is the day in 1925 that US troops left Nicaragua. They had been there since 1912. This is the day in 1934 that Hitler merged the offices of the German Chancellor and President and declared himself “Fuhrer” (leader). In 1943 on this day General Patton slapped a GI in a hospital and accused him of being a coward. On this day in 1955 Hurricane Connie began pounding the US for 11 days making landfall in North Carolina that traveling North to the Great Lakes. The dead person for today is Lenny Bruce. He’s one of my favorites. Lenny said, “There’s a lot of money in wars, except in the war on poverty. Can’t make any bread helping the poor.” “Never trust a preacher with more than two suits.” “Once the country was settled and built, the bosses changed the order from a stack of educated workers to a barrel of minimum wage lottery dreamers.” Last one: “Wouldn’t it be nice if all the people who are lonesome could live in one big dormitory, sleep in beds next to each other, talk, laugh, and keep the lights on as long as they want to? Abide.
